UK Announces EUDR-Aligned Rules: What It Means for AHA

The UK is moving towards new due diligence rules aligned with the EU Deforestation Regulation. Discover what the proposed legislation means for timber imports and why the AHA platform positions U.S. hardwoods as a trusted, low-risk choice for the UK market.

On June 23, 2026, the UK government announced plans to introduce new due diligence legislation to tackle global deforestation. Expected to roll out in 2027, the rules will apply to businesses in England, Scotland, and Wales with an annual turnover exceeding £1 million.

A central objective of the new framework is to align Great Britain with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) — which already applies in Northern Ireland under post-Brexit arrangements — thereby creating a single regulatory baseline across the entire UK market.

Supply Chain Realities Create Opportunities for U.S.Hardwoods

While the UK’s shift toward EUDR alignment creates potential friction for global supply chains, it places the U.S. hardwood sector in a uniquely strong position. The UK relies heavily on timber imports, with nearly 86% originating from three key regions: the EU (60%), China (16%), and the U.S.(10%).

Many international competitors face severe hurdles in supplying the granular due diligence data required by EUDR-style regulations:

· EU Timber: Recent amendments to the EUDR removed tracking obligations for EU producers navigating internal supply chains, making origin traceability complex.

· Chinese Processing: Strict regulatory limits enacted in China restrict domestic firms from sharing detailed due diligence data with overseas buyers.

Because many global competitors will struggle to provide reliable assurances of origin, UK importers will face mounting pressure to secure compliant, low-risk timber alternatives.

The AHA Platform: A Ready-Made Compliance Solution

This regulatory shift directly highlights the foresight and value of the AHA platform. Over the past four years, the U.S. hardwood industry has invested heavily in building AHA to deliver verifiable, science-backed due diligence data tailored to the unique structure of American private forestry.AHA is, of course, built around the concept of jurisdictional risk assessment and thereby ensures efficient and low-friction compliance in a negligible risk sector. It enables U.S. exporters to prove that every individual consignment originates from identifiable U.S. counties where independent data verifies a negligible risk of both illegal harvesting and deforestation.

Under international trade rules, any due diligence standards enforced by the UK must be applied equally across all trading partners. As UK importers demand equivalent transparency from all global suppliers, AHA stands out as a practical, ready-to-use solution that keeps U.S. hardwoods moving smoothly into Great Britain.

Next Steps

AHEC/AHA will participate actively in the formal UK consultation process scheduled for this fall. We remain in close contact with Timber Development UK (TDUK) to ensure the trade's response reflects practical supply chain realities while keeping American hardwoods at the forefront of the UK market. We will be specifically calling for adoption of a robust jurisdictional risk-based approach, to be universally applied to all GB imports from both inside and outside the EU, backed by tough standards for demonstrating negligible risk at a local administrative unit level and for proving provenance to negligible risk jurisdictions.
